I’ve driven by the sign that says Home to Original Pony Express Station on the interstate countless times, but today, with no agenda planned, I finally had the liberty to stop and visit.
Located in Gothenburg, NE, the “Original Pony Express Station” is a single room log cabin that used to be a 2 story cabin 25 or so miles west of here near Fort McPherson. It was built in 1854 on a site called the Upper 96 Ranch by Sam Machette and served as a trading post and ranch house until 1860 when it was used as a pony express station during the express’s 18 months of service. After that, it was used as a stage, boarding and storage area on the ranch.
In 1931 it was donated to the town of Gothenburg. The local American Legion dismantled it and moved it to it’s current locaion, in Ehman Park where it was turned into a free Pony Express Museum. This year it says it is open from May 23 to Mid October if you’re interested in stopping by.
